VelociRaptured by Science: An Origin Story
Welcome to the very first installment of the T. ReX-Files! Are you sick of dinosaur puns already? I hope not, because I can promise this won't be the last one.
I thought the best way to start this blog would be to introduce myself a bit more formally and talk about why I started this SciComm journey in the first place. While I want this blog to be an informative resource on a variety of different scientific subjects, I also want it to be a place to discuss other topics people find interesting. Throughout this blog, I hope to provide some insight on scientific subjects I consider myself knowledgeable in, as well as highlight new developments in the SciComm world. I have a particular affinity for some of the less loved creatures on this Earth (reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, etc.) and I hope to spread some love to them on a regular basis. Perhaps most importantly, I created this blog to meet more of my fellow science nerds and connect with people of various backgrounds and expertise. It is my goal to become a full-time science communicator/educator one day and I am so excited to start that journey right here!
I am one of the very few people that is lucky enough to say I do what I've wanted to do since I was a kid. From my very early days I have known I wanted to be a scientist. Mind you, my niche interests and concentration have changed dozens of times over the years, but I've always had my heart set on science, particularly biology and paleontology. I always loved animals as a kid, especially dinosaurs, and I read books about them constantly. Throughout college and grad school, I followed that passion on numerous adventures in the name of science and discovery, all of which I hope to talk about on this blog in the future. Traveling is another subject I am passionate about; I have been to some incredible places, but hope to continue exploring the world through a scientific lens and can't wait to share some of these travels with you all.
Besides science, I hope to also talk about some of my other interests throughout this blog. We just moved to the Richmond, VA area a couple months ago, so I will definitely be posting as we explore the area. I love trying new restaurants, reading horror/thriller novels (where my Stephen King fans at?!), and hiking and camping with my boyfriend, Brandon, and our dog, Rascal (who you will inevitably meet in a post sooner rather than later). I volunteer at my local animal shelter on a regular basis (when we aren't in the middle of a global pandemic), and advocate for shelter dogs a lot in my free time. There are so many other things I could mention here that represent me, but that would result in a post way longer than I intended. So, I will leave it at that and save my other interests for another day.
I hope that this blog will be a fun and engaging place for my fellow scientists and non-science oriented friends alike to learn and connect. Have a suggestion for a post topic, questions about something I wrote about (or anything, really), or want to author a guest post on your area of expertise? Send me a message/email, leave a comment, or fill out the contact form! This blog is as much for the SciComm community as it is for me. If you read this far, THANK YOU! All of your support means the world to me, and I cannot wait to continue sharing with you all!
